Lighthouse Keepers: Life on the Rock

For most of the 19th and 20th centuries, lighthouse keeping was a hereditary profession passed down through families. Keepers and their families lived in attached dwellings, tending the light through every storm, season after season.

The isolation was intense — some rock stations were resupplied only every three months. Yet many keepers describe their time on station as the most meaningful period of their lives.
