Light Characteristics and What They Mean

Every lighthouse has a unique light characteristic — a combination of colour, rhythm, and sequence that allows mariners to identify it positively, even at night or in reduced visibility.

The most common characteristics include fixed lights, flashing lights, and occulting lights. Group flashing patterns, where a specific number of flashes repeat in a cycle, allow a single lighthouse to be unambiguously distinguished from its neighbours.
