Lighthouses have guided mariners for over 2,000 years. The Pharos of Alexandria, built around 280 BC, is widely regarded as the first true lighthouse and stood as one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.

The 19th century brought an explosion of lighthouse construction as maritime trade expanded globally. Engineers like John Smeaton pioneered the use of hydraulic lime concrete, enabling structures to survive the most hostile coastal environments.
